Farming has always been in Colin’s blood as a fourth-generation farmer.
Throughout his childhood, he spent every spare hour working or playing on his family-run farm in Edinburgh and has since spent many years there helping to build up the arable farm business with his father and brother.
It was not until he moved to Urquhart Farm, Crossford with his wife, Mairi, that he realised he wanted more…
Urquhart was previously farmed as an intensive arable system.
However, Colin and Mairi are highly motivated to reduce the reliance on manmade inputs and diversify the output of the business, at the same time as promoting locally reared, solely grass-fed meat for others to enjoy. This led to introducing a small fold of Highland cattle and a small flock of native-bred sheep in 2020.
The first couple of years since these purchases has involved a steep learning curve, but the desire to raise and breed happy animals in a caring and stress-free environment has driven the young farming family to learn and adhere to the highest levels of husbandry that shows in the quality and flavour of the produce and at the same time improves the quality of the environment.
Colin and Mairi’s first small step towards their dream has been to create this online shop to sell their home-reared produce to the public.
The aim of Urquhart Farms is to provide high-quality, locally sourced seasonal produce, with a focus on reducing food miles. Our ethos is “from field to fork”.
